Jim Carr’s career spans a variety of interests. Beginning as an oboe player with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) he became Director of Development with the WSO and then Executive Director of the Manitoba Arts Council. He then graduated with joint honours degrees in History and International Relations from McGill University and wrote for the Globe and Mail, Winnipeg Sun and the Winnipeg Free Press before being hired as the Executive Director of External Relations for the University of Winnipeg.

Mr. Carr was elected to the Manitoba Legislature in 1988, becoming Deputy Leader of the Manitoba Liberal party and served on the Meech Lake and Charlottetown constitutional task forces. He was on the editorial board of the Winnipeg Free Press and was awarded the Commonwealth Fellowship for study in London.

He is the founding President and CEO of the Business Council of Manitoba and has served in this position since 1998. He is currently Co-chair of the Winnipeg Poverty Reduction Council, a board member of the Canada West Foundation, the Winnipeg Airports Authority and the Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice at St. Paul’s College, University of Manitoba.
